“BABY WHEN YOU LEFT” GETS SINGER SOPHIA BROWN THE UK’s BRIGHT STAR AWARD!

Singer Sophia Brown says winning the Bright Star Awards for Best Reggae Single with Baby When You Left, completes her remarkable comeback from a life-threatening motor accident. The awards, first held in 2017, took place virtually from London on January 31. Baby When You Left, an easy-listening ballad, beat four rivals for victory. “This was my coming out song. I’m truly grateful,” said Brown, who co-wrote the single with Hakim Williams. Baby When You Left is produced by former Steel Pulse keyboardist Sydney Mills.

Ironically, it was released on Valentine’s Day last year. Brown recorded it shortly after completing months of therapy for injuries sustained in a 2017 accident in Maryland. With a feel reminiscent of British lovers rock, circa late 1970s, Baby When You Left went number one on the South Florida Foundation Network Chart and also did well in British reggae circles. Brown plans to release new songs in March and possibly an EP before summer. The Bright Star Awards is the brainchild of popular British radio personality, DJ Sly. It recognizes the year’s top artistes in the British black music scene. Janet Kay, a pioneer of British lovers rock, was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Lloyd Brown won Best Reggae Album for The Salute.
